Overview
The first "Friendship City"
document was signed
by the mayors of Broomfield and Maruko in May of 2001.
Since that time
Maruko students have visited Broomfield in each odd numbered year, and
Broomfield has sent ambassadors
to Maruko in even numbered years.
Recently, Maruko and other smaller municipalities merged to become part
of the larger community
of Ueda in Japan. Broomfield's mayor and the
Mayor of Ueda signed the updated agreement in the summer of 2006.
A Broomfield City Council
Memorandum authorizes the agreement now in
use.
The "Friendship City" Relationship states that the intent of the
programs are to:
-
Provide opportunities for city official and citizens to experience and explore other
cultures through long-term community partnerships. -
Create an atmosphere in which economic and community development
can be implemented and strengthened. -
Stimulate environments through which communities will creatively learn, work, and
solve problems together through reciprocal cultural, educational, municipal, business,
professional and technical exchanges and projects.
