Ueda is a
city in the Nagano Prefecture in Japan.
Most Broomfielder's
say "oo-ay-duh" with an emphasis on the middle syllable
(long a) when referring to this city.
Broomfield's
original sister city agreement was with the former Town
of Maruko.
On March 6, 2006, Maruko was officially incorporated into
the larger neighboring city of Ueda.
The "nee"
Ueda city also includes the former town of
Sanada, the former village
of Takeshi and the former city of Ueda, which existed as Ueda for 87 years
before the merger.
The
population of "new"
Ueda city as of April 2006, was 163,256 with
a land area of 522km2. Compare
this to Broomfield, which has an
estimated population of 52,660 as of June 2007 and a total
land area of 87km2
(we would say 33.6 square miles).
Prior to the
merger, Maruko's only sister city was
Broomfield. Ueda had other sister city
relationships within Japan and also inherited sister city
relationships during the merger with the surrounding
communities. We
believe the Broomfield relationship is the strongest of
Ueda's sister city programs.
